How our dentist can help nervous patients with dental care

When you have an underlying phobia concerning dental treatments, it is likely that when you get a reminder that it is time to attend a biannual visit, you are more likely to think of any excuse you can to get out of it!

This is usually due to an underlying issue which occurred in your childhood. Perhaps you had a dental team that was unsympathetic, or you experienced a great deal of discomfort following an invasive dental treatment.

At Spa Dental, we are exceptionally proud of how our dentist in Parramatta can manage even the most phobic of dental patients. We pride ourselves on being compassionate and sympathetic to all of our patients’ needs and will not give the dreaded lecture that many people are concerned will happen if they have missed a few dental appointments.

If you book an appointment to see our dentist in Parramatta, what are some of the methods that we use to ensure you are as psychologically comfortable as possible during the process?

Communication

If you have a mild phobia, then our dentist in Parramatta will aim to communicate more openly with you throughout the process. It is indeed very unnerving when you have someone sticking objects into your mouth under a bright light without being told what’s going on! If you tell us that you have a phobia, we will work with you using communication to ensure that you are in control at all times and if you experience any discomfort, you can simply raise a hand and we will stop so you can take a break.

Music

Many people find that their worries relating to dental care revolve around the dreaded dental drill. We can allow our patients to wear a headset connected to an iPhone or CD player during treatment, so you can listen to your favourite music or even a guided meditation to help distract you from the noise and what is occurring. We may need to tap you on the shoulder a few times though if we need you to open your mouth wider, but apart from that, you can listen to whatever you wish to. Just make sure that there is nothing jump-scare related playing when we’re working on your teeth!

Nitrous oxide

Next on the list is nitrous oxide or laughing gas. This is great if you want to be slightly psychologically removed from the process. This is applied via a mask and will block any discomfort you may feel from any fillings or root canals we may be performing. Once the mask is removed, you will be able to go about your day as normal but may feel a bit woozy.

IV sedation

IV sedation is for those who have a more extreme phobia and want to be removed from the dental process altogether. This is an option that is injected into your arm via a drip and will allow you to enter a sedated state, where you will still be able to respond to our team’s instructions, but won’t feel any discomfort. If you have IV sedation, you will need somebody to escort you home afterwards and keep an eye on you for the next 24 hours. You should also avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for the next day or so.
