And that fear is a fear of dental checkups and procedures.

This is not a new thing either, and in many polls relating to phobias, fear of dental teams, check-ups and even going into surgery usually appears in the top 10. Luckily, this also means that if you have concerns about dentistry, you aren’t alone.

In 2022, more dental teams than ever before are aiming to help the most phobic patients return to the surgeries so that everyone can have great-looking and healthy smiles. And we are no exception.

At Spa Dental Sydney, our dentist in Sydney is always happy to work with nervous patients. We will help you get to the source of your anxiety and always aim to explain every procedure to you before we do it or we won’t; whichever option makes you feel more comfortable!

In this article, our dentist in Sydney explores some of the fundamental ways we help our more nervous and phobic patients relax in our dental surgery. So, read on to learn more!

Communication

If your phobia of the dental chair comes from having a judgemental dental team when you were much younger, we can assure you that we will treat you with kindness and compassion.

Our dentist in Sydney will also aim to keep communication with you open so that you are free to ask us questions while in the chair.

We are also happy to talk about the weather if you like! Whatever makes you the most comfortable!

Music

Many people find the sound of the dental shrill quite unnerving, and we understand why!

So, if you want to block that out, our team is more than happy to accommodate you wearing a headset while you undertake treatment. We don’t usually offer this straight off the bat, however, and will try to get to know you a little bit first and work on hand signals so that you can tell us when to stop and we can tell you when we need you to open your mouth wider.

Oral sedation

For our more nervous patients, we can offer oral sedation, usually in the form of a benzodiazepine. This will allow you to relax while we work on your mouth, but before administration, we will need to discuss this with your doctor to ensure it does not interact with any other medications you are currently taking.

Intravenous sedation

Next on the list is intravenous (IV) sedation, which is injected into your arm for the duration of the treatment. IV sedation will render you in a twilight state; you will be partially conscious and able to respond to our team’s instructions. Once the needle is removed from your arm, you will wake up and have no memory of the procedure.

So, if you want to overcome your fear of getting into the dental chair, call our team today, and we will help you.

DISCLAIMER

All treatments carry risks. Individual consultation is required with one of our practitioners to ensure that the treatment is right for you.

It is one phobia or fear that seems logical at the time but can have lifelong issues if it isn’t dealt with head-on.
